Discover the driving force behind the dynamic biotech landscape at our seminar. Unveiling the blueprint for success, we delve into the pivotal role of university research in birthing groundbreaking biotech ventures. With a significant proportion of emerging biotech companies tracing their roots back to cutting-edge university discoveries fueled by Federal funding, the seminar illuminates the transformative journey of ideas from academia to the marketplace.

The majority of new biotech companies originate with new discoveries and inventions from university research, most of which was sponsored by Federal funding. Patents from such research are owned by the universities, and rights to them are given to new startups via licensed granted by the university.

This seminar discusses how MIT manages patent filings and licensing through its Technology Licensing Office, and encourages entrepreneurship by faculty and students through its many “Innovation” initiatives. Hundreds of new biotech companies have spun out of MIT and its Whitehead Institute affiliate. Some of the more famous local companies include Alnylam, BluebirdBio, Momenta, and Ginko Bioworks.
