Apple, Nvidia Reportedly in Talks to Join OpenAI's Latest Funding Round
AsianFin--Apple and chip giant Nvidia are reportedly in discussions to invest in OpenAI as part of a new funding round that could value the ChatGPT creator at more than $100 billion, according to media reports on Thursday.
The Wall Street Journal first broke the news of Apple's interest, while Bloomberg News reported on Nvidia's potential involvement.
This news follows a report that venture capital firm Thrive Capital is set to invest around $1 billion in OpenAI, leading the funding round.
Apple has increasingly integrated OpenAI into its artificial intelligence strategy, bringing OpenAI's ChatGPT to its devices in June as part of its "Apple Intelligence" initiative. Additionally, Apple is rumored to have secured an observer role on OpenAI's board.
Microsoft, OpenAI's largest strategic investor with over $10 billion invested, is also expected to participate in this latest round of funding, according to the Wall Street Journal. The exact amounts of investment from Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia remain undisclosed.
OpenAI's soaring valuation reflects the AI arms race it ignited with the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, pushing companies across various industries to pour billions into the technology to stay competitive. Earlier this year, OpenAI was reportedly valued at $80 billion after a tender offer led by Thrive Capital.
